The elegantly simple colors on this bowl are produced due to changes to the glaze that occur during firing. This highly regarded technique, referred to as "tenmoku," produces strange and mysterious colors like those of the Milk Way, which are a chance by-product of the firing process, meaning that one can never know what the end result will look like until the bowls are removed from the kiln. They look different depending on the angle from which they are viewed, and when you fill them with sake they look different again, making them fun to use.
